Quick Cell-Shading Tutorial by KariNeko Quick Cell-Shading Tutorial by KariNeko
Oh SNAP, I finally (attempted) to make another tutorial for you guys and gals! :ohnoes: I decided to use my MELODRAMATIC PANIC lineart because 1. it wasn't already colored and 2. it seemed like it would be pretty easy for me to use as an example. Also, the program I used from start to finish for this pic was Adobe Illustrator CS but the process can pretty much be used in any program that has layers.

BE NICE ABOUT IT...I'm not one that usually likes to do tutorials since people always complain about something when I try 'em!

Hope you like it and tell me what ya think of it! ...and please DON'T tell me if there's a spelling error! D:

P.S. I only did the face because I'm lazy. <3

PLEASE COMMENT SO I'LL KNOW IF I SHOULD EVER DO ANOTHER TUTORIAL OR NOT!

Ayato (c) KariNeko

Not actually one of the most competent of Tutorials. While this does show the theory of lighting it shows little of the procedures of cell-shading.

I really like your tutorial. I'm new with illustrator but I'm definitely going to try this way of coloring.
How did you get the lines to look so good?

when you start doing the shading, how did you get the shadows to be so perfect when following the stroke? is there some trick you can do with the paths so none of the coloring goes outside of the lines, or do u just outline that well?

I'd just used the pen tool make a shape of the shadow then once you close it click nside of it and click fill path choose your color then after you are done click on it again and select delete path

Simple and to the point! The ultra detailed guides are nice but some people who just want a basic guide this is perfect!

The only critique I'd have is the text drawing attention to the text may help. Like Chat bubbles. Do more! If you haven all ready.

I've suggested this tutorial to a friend who I think would really benefit from it (they tend towards an animeish/manga art style), so thanks for making it available. It looked to be the easiest to follow and understand one out there.

Also, ignore that person who commented below me (cyanidexteaparty). That person doesn't need a tutorial or a guide. It sounds to me like they need a lesson in how to use digital image programs in the first place. Your tutorial isn't about how to use the pen tool or Illustrator, after all. People should already know how to do that.

this really isn't a tutorial. it does not actually SHOW me how to do cell shading in illustrator...
its not really a guide either =/

if u actually went through step by step of HOW to use the pen tool and do cell shading, then it would be a tutorial.

this did not help me in the slightest. =/

fail.

I must concur with ~cyanidexteaparty on this too. Its good to show the importance of locating your light source. however, it doesnt show how to get the shading working within the lines of the original line art and "solid color"

Well the tutorial isn't really on HOW to doa Cell-shade in Illustrator. (I would think that would be the title) I thought it was basically teaching us a little bit on how to do it in, well, ANY program. You know the basics

I use Sai, and I found this helpful. *shrug*

So no, it really isn't a fail.

I have a question about this in Illustrator CS3: When using the paint bucket tool to do the base colors, it always colors in the same layer as the lineart, even if I have a different layer selected. How do I put the base colors on a different layer?

Sorry if this seems like a retarded question, but is adobe illustrator what people use for making web-comics?

I'm sure a few do. I know a lot of webcomic artists also use Photoshop and Flash as well. It's basically what ever the artist is comfortable with. :3

I do all of my artwork in Illstrator which is a vector program (you use points instead of pixels to draw). This makes it so my lines are uber smooth. :3
